We receive requests for singing from caregivers, family members and friends of people who are critically ill, struggling to live or nearing the end of their life. If you know someone in Whatcom County who is ill and would like us to sing for them, please call 360-927-4384. If we can’t answer the phone, please leave us a message and we will return your call within 24 hours.
When we talk with you on the phone, we will ask for some basic information: the patient’s name, age, condition and location; how urgent our visit is; and whom we should call to schedule a visit. If you have any information about the patient’s religious or musical preferences, that would be helpful to us also.
Our scheduler will then find a singer to lead a sing for your loved one or patient, and that person will call to arrange a convenient time. In urgent cases, we try to get singers to the bedside the same day. Otherwise, a visit will be scheduled in 2 to 7 days.
A small group of two to four singers will visit your loved one or patient, whether they are at home or in a care facility. We bring our own stools to sit on around the bedside. We usually sing quietly for 20 to 30 minutes.
Bellingham Threshold Singers is not a performance group. We don’t expect applause. We don’t require that the client be awake or alert or even acknowledge our presence. We consider it a compliment if a person drifts off to sleep while we sing.
While at the bedside, we choose songs that fit the client’s needs from moment to moment. We are sensitive to the client’s needs for rest, for quiet, for privacy and for visiting with family. We are not offended if we are told that the client doesn’t want singing after all or wants us to leave after a single song.
There is no charge for a visit from our volunteers.
