BTS News – February 2015
Hello, Friends of Bellingham Threshold Singers,
Here’s our first update of 2015!
The 2014 stats are all in. What a year of growth and giving!
We made 575 bedside visits during the year.
Our membership increased from 26 to 38, and 9 new Sails began singing at the bedside.
Our rehearsals are so well attended that we needed to purchase additional chairs so we could fit everyone in the circle. And we now have a newer keyboard for use at rehearsals.
We started a beautiful notebook for collecting obituary notices for the people for whom we sang. It’s a tribute to honor and to learn more about them.
There were changes to the Crows’ Nest at the end of the year. Marlene stepped down as Treasurer and Jana took her place. Mary flew from the Nest after 3 years of service. Donna-Lee has joined.
At our annual meeting in December, we made some changes to our bylaws, reviewed our accomplishments in 2014, and voiced our appreciation for all our members who help keep BTS running smoothly.
We ended the year in good financial health. Although we received very little in grants in 2014, donations from members and non-members came close to meeting our expenses. We calculated that we spent $6.39 for every bedside visit.
And now that it’s 2015:
2015 began with the loss of one of our own members, Marsha Smith, who died of cancer in January. It was important to us all to support Marsha and her husband Mark during her days of medical treatment and then Hospice care. BTS sisters sang for her at Hospice House and spoke and sang at her memorial service. It was an honor not only to acknowledge Marsha for being a part of our group but to also witness the importance of sisterhood and song for one of our own.
We will have a Leadership Retreat in February for 12 members who hold leadership positions. We’re looking forward to a day of fun and food and hard work, topped off with a catered dinner. With the growth we’ve experienced, it’s more important than ever to strengthen the lines of communication among leaders.
We have decided to suspend advertising to the public our Compassionate Singing class for a while. We had a great response to the last class and we continue to attract new members. Our focus now is on consolidating our growth and training our members to be excellent Sails and Anchors. A Compassionate Singing class for our members begins in March, and a training for Anchors is in the works.
Come visit: Guests are always welcome at our rehearsals, which are on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month, 6:30 to 8:30 pm at Jerns Funeral Chapel at the corner of Sunset and James. It’s okay to just observe, but chances are you’ll want to sing along with us. Call 360-927-4384 for more information or check out our website at BellinghamThresholdSingers.org.
Thank you, as always, for your enduring interest and support.
